3-D Matrix is a leading medical device company. As a spin off from MIT, the company utilises self-assembling peptide technology to continually innovate and serve healthcare professionals around the globe. Its flagship product is the haemostatic hydrogel, PuraStat.
PuraStat is a synthetic haemostatic material in the form of a prefilled syringe. Upon contact with physiological fluids, such as blood, the gel forms a mechanical barrier which quickly causes haemostasis to occur.
The hydrogel is particularly effective for endoscopic procedures as it is immediately ready to use, it is simply removed from the box and attached to the endoscopic catheter so no time is wasted during the procedure. It also has a transparent, viscous consistency, allowing it to evenly cover surfaces, whilst also ensuring the surgeon can retain visibility of the bleeding site and continue with the procedure without any impairment to vision. Sutures or clips can also be applied before or after the hydrogel has been applied, as required.
PuraStat utilises its unique properties to improve bleeding management in GI endoscopy across a range of procedures, including but not limited to endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). It’s current indications extend to the following*:
- Bleeding from small blood vessels and oozing from capillaries of the parenchyma and surrounding tissues of solid organs
- Oozing from vascular anastomoses to native or artificial vessels, on the surface of blood vessels and surrounding tissues
- Bleeding from small vessels and oozing from capillaries of the GI tract following surgical procedures and surrounding tissues
- Reduction of delayed bleeding following gastrointestinal endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) procedures in the colon
