Peter Vilmann is Full Professor of Endoscopy in Copenhagen University Herlev Hospital, Denmark and one of the most recognized pioneers in endosonographic ultrasound. He was the first in the world to perform EUS-guided fine needle biopsy (FNA) in 1991, and he is co-inventor of the first needle assembly for EUS-guided aspiration biopsy. Furthermore, he has conducted pioneering work in the field of EUS guided biopsy and Endobronchial Ultrasound Guided Transbronchial Needle Aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) both, in development of the methods as well as in clinical testing for documentation of their relevance and impact in gastroenterology and pulmonology. Apart from his society memberships he has dedicated his efforts on teaching endoscopy during more than 400 international lectures as well as hands-on demonstrations and teaching events for young endoscopists. Present research interests include further work in the field of EUS and EUS-guided biopsy, diagnostic and therapeutic EUS procedures with focus on improvement of diagnosis and therapy of pancreatic cancer and cystic pancreatic lesions in a translational research environment.
